Frequently Asked Questions
Can we leave our car somewhere safe?
Vehicles can be left at Jamie’s place. There is plenty of room and it’s safe and secure.
How fit do I need to be?
If you have any concerns about your level of fitness the five day adventure may be the most suitable, or call Jamie to discuss.
What do Unique provide?
Unique will provide the following:
- Air mattress
- Inflatable pillow
- Dry bag
- Life jacket
- Department of Conservation passes
- Food (main meals and some snacks) and water
Is there an age limit?
It is preferable that children be over 12 years of age, however there is no upper age limit – many people over 60 have enjoyed their trip down the river.
Could this be done with a corporate group?
We see this as the perfect opportunity to build a strong team and encourage working together. Rather than a one-day team building exercise, or playing games in a board room, why not canoe the Whanganui River together?
Where do we start from?
Trips normally start at Jamie’s place, six kilometres from Feilding (599 Makino Road, Feilding). Feilding is a two hour drive from Wellington, and approximately six hours from Auckland or you could be picked up at Ohakune.
How will we get to the river?
The journey to Whakahoro is the start of your Unique experience. The majority of trips will leave from Feilding, winding through the back of Rangitikei, and arriving at Whakahoro a few hours later. A mini-bus will transport everyone to Whakahoro, with all gear and canoes.
Other arrangements can be made, just talk to us about options.
Do I need previous canoeing experience?
Not at all, these trips cater for the absolute beginner who has never paddled before. You’ll be given clear guidance prior to leaving in order to help you manage, and Jamie will always be on-hand to offer advice. There are a number of rapids between Whakahoro and Pipiriki, however they're no problem at all – they are perfect for beginners, great fun but not at all dangerous.
What do I need to bring?
The following is recommended:
- Snack food – anything you may want to keep you going whilst on the river, between meals
- Warm on-river and off-river clothes
A comprehensive list will be provided when you book.
How many people do I need to book?
You can book as an individual, a couple or a group. A tour is usually made up of 12-14 people, sometimes all of these will be from one group, but the majority of times it's a mixture of people.
